Herman D. White is the author of "An Informal History of the Northern Baseball League." Walter H. Brovald is the editor of White's history. This page provides some background information about them.
Herman D. White (1894-1976) was named "temporary" president of the Northern League in November 1934. This "temporary" arrangement lasted from 1935-1957. White was also president of the league in 1960-1961. In addition, when the Wisconsin State League formed in 1940, White was president of that league for 10 years. During the 1940's and 1950's, White served four consecutive terms as a member of the executive committee of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (NAPBL), and served three terms as its chairman.
Walter H. Brovald (1928-1991) was White's nephew. He acted as the editor and publisher of White's informal history, being the one into whose hands it passed after White's death. Gryphon Press was Brovald's private enterprise. Brovald was the president of the Wisconsin Press Association for a time. He obtained his Masters degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Minnesota in 1967, then joined the faculty from 1967-1989. He retired as a full Professor.
